Review written by Tara
Last year a business
colleague sent me a Mrs. Beasley's "Miss Grace Lemon Cake" as a
holiday gift. So moist, tart, and sweet, it was simply one of the best lemon
cakes I've ever tasted, so I gladly ordered several to give to my friends
and family that holiday, knowing they would enjoy it as much as I did.
When I went to Mrs. Beasley's site (www.mrsbeasleys.com), I saw that besides
cakes, they had several holiday-themed gifts such as a Christmas tree-shaped
basket full of cookies and brownies, a beautiful tin filled with Star of
David cookies for Hannukah, and a three-box set of cookies and cakes stacked
and decorated like a snowman. The selection of gifts was excellent and the
descriptions of the sweets made my mouth water!
Every item comes beautifully decorated, most in attractive boxes tied with
ribbons, a very high quality presentation. Moreover, my lemon cake arrived
in a sturdy, reusable tin. It was thoughtfully hand-wrapped, first in wax
paper, then in foil. The bottom of the pan was also carefully lined with
large bubble wrap, ensuring my cake would arrive unbruised.
I returned to the Mrs. Beasley's site at other times during the year and
found similar holiday theme gifts for Easter and Halloween. Earlier for
Easter I sent a friend a set of pastel-colored watering cans [functional]
that came full of chocolates, cookies, and brownies.
I was impressed with the simplicity of the ordering process which enabled me
to easily send gifts to multiple recipients. This can often get confusing
when ordering online but Mrs. Beasley's made it very easy and
straightforward. Simply create an account and your billing information and
recipient list will be saved. Then a list of your ordered items is presented
and you simply match each item with a recipient. I was so impressed when I
went back to the site this year and found all my recipients neatly organized
into an address book. I didn't have to enter several addresses all over
again!
You can enclose a short personal message with each gift. Your message is
then displayed on the outside of the box, on the shipping label, with clear
"to" and "from" fields that proudly announce your gift.
There is also a clever "suffix" field if you want to add the words
"and Family" to your recipient's name on the gift box, as I did
for many of my holiday gifts.
The price of their cakes, gifts and delivery options are slightly on the
expensive side, but the quality of their baked goods (like homemade) and the
ease of ordering at their site makes it a worthwhile purchase. (Lemon cake,
$28.95; Specialty tins and baskets, $30 - $100; Corporate gift packages, $50
to over $100.) There are two navigation menus at the top of the site that
allow you to shop by category or price, a convenience if you want to stick
to a budget.
While Mrs. Beasley's delivers around the world, their online site only takes
orders for items to be shipped in the US. (International customers can call
800-800-CAKE to order. This same number is offered for customer service
inquiries.) Gifts are shipped via UPS ground and arrive in 2-4 days
guaranteed. Express and Saturday delivery options are available for an
additional charge. No Sunday delivery. Shipping and delivery charges are
based on product weight or recipient zip code. To learn a product's shipping
and delivery costs, just click on the "see shipping/delivery costs"
link on any product detail page. (Sending a single lemon cake to Michigan
was about $5.00.) A copy of your invoice is immediately emailed to the
address you provided when you opened an account.
Gifts that I ordered on Tuesday arrived at my recipients (all over the
country) on Friday--fast and when promised. And those who received the gifts
were full of praise and thanks!
In short, if you don't have time to bake a homemade gift, then trust Mrs.
Beasley's, it's the next best thing!
