When I was in University,
I worked at a Belgian chocolate shop during the holiday seasons as a seasonal
worker. I did the normal retail duties and since it was a chocolate shop where
people could pick the pieces that they wanted in each box, I had to remember
what filling was in each piece in case anyone asked. The boss even encouraged us
to try a few. Of course I had to do my duty and do just that. That’s when I
became a chocolate snob. No more Hershey’s for me! I believed that the only
good chocolate in this world came from Belgium, Switzerland, or some other
European country. Of course my Belgian boss liked to tell us that German
chocolate was not very good but their cakes and cookies were okay. I think Swiss
chocolate is the richest tasting but Belgian fillings rank among the best in the
world. If you’ve ever tried the fresh cream fillings, you know what I’m
talking about. Then came Dan’s chocolate.
My first experience with Dan’s chocolate was when they had their free sample
promotion. I think they were just starting the business and decided to let the
public taste their wares so that we could all get addicted to it. If it
weren’t so expensive, it would have worked on me. I just recently found a way
to get their chocolate a little cheaper than on their website. I go to overstock.com
and get the package that is out of season. In this case, I got the Thanksgiving
package with the free shipping. I paid about $27 for 36 pieces. For those of you
who eat Hershey’s or Pot of Gold, this is probably shockingly expensive. For
my fellow chocolate snobs, this is a bargain.
So here are my impressions of their assorted selection:
1. Udder Delights
Basically, this is your run of the mill milk chocolate truffle. It’s one of
those things that could be described as simple and elegant. As with most
European style truffle centers, there is a very slight hint of alcohol but only
so slight as nondrinkers like myself would notice. Other people might just
describe the alcohol taste as being rich. Since this is all milk chocolate, I
would probably recommend this one for the kids. Adults would enjoy it too but
chocolate snobs would probably want to save their taste buds for one of the dark
chocolates.
2. Choc-a-lot
This is basically the same as the Udder Delight except that it is the dark
chocolate version. It’s a little richer because there is more cocoa in dark
chocolate than in milk chocolate. This is the chocolate snob version of the
Udder Delight.
3. Loca Mocha
This is a dark chocolate with the creamy coffee center. Very nice. Coffee snobs
and chocolate snobs alike will love this.
4. Carmalita
This is actually my favorite. If you have had European chocolate before, that is
the kind of good runny caramel that’s in the Carmalita. It’s not that
American caramel that we used to get in a box of Pot of Gold or during
Hallowe’en. When you choose your assortment, you can actually get one box of
all Carmalitas. It’s that good! My only wish is that they made this with dark
chocolate for us chocolate snobs.
5. Razz-matazz
This is something that is rarely found in North America. A dark chocolate and
raspberry puree filling that’s not too sweet. The puree is mixed will with the
creamy dark chocolate stuff so you don’t see any jam-like raspberry stuff in
the middle. It’s covered in dark chocolate because milk chocolate would just
ruin the experience. It’s not as sinfully delicious as the raspberry liquor
chocolate that I used to munch on at the Belgian chocolate shop but it’s still
lovely. This one also looks like the stereotypical truffle because it’s round
and dusted with cocoa for extra elegance.
6. Coco Motion
This is another one for the kids. It’s a creamy milk chocolate center flavored
with coconut milk and it’s covered in milk chocolate. Very tame and yummy.
Unlike American coconut chocolate, there are none of those annoying bits of
fibrous coconut that end up between your teeth. It’s all smooth and light.
7. Transcendental Toffee
This is good but I think it’s patting itself on its proverbial back. Maybe
it’s because I’m just not a nut fan. They describe this as
“mind-expanding” but I really think that this is one for the kids. It has
crushed almond and hazelnut filling with a few toffee bits in the center.
8. Orangadu
This is one that’s for the connoisseur. Nothing beats orange peel dipped in
dark chocolate but this is a close second. If you like the combination of orange
and chocolate but don’t like the way North American Chocolate makers drown out
the orange flavor in sugar, this one’s for you.
9. Drom-a-Dairy
This one is for the nut fan. Since it’s milk chocolate, I’m tempted to say
that it’s for the kids. However, the two hazelnuts on top make it a little
more elegant than your regular milk chocolate. The two whole hazelnuts really
give it a Belgian flavor because they tend to use more hazelnuts in their
truffles than the Americans.
10. Chief Chokolada
This is the only other chocolate in the box that looks like a stereotypical
truffle because it’s round and dusted with confectioner’s sugar. The inside
is a chocolate snob’s typical dark chocolate orgasm. It’s a smooth dark
chocolate filling covered in dark chocolate. To top it off, it has that European
hint of alcohol that I described before that can also be described as extra
richness. This guy has really earned its name!
All of these chocolates can be seen on their website with their own pictures and
descriptions so that you can look at them and drool or maybe match them up with
the chocolates in your box. They have released a couple of new chocolates since
I wrote this article. This is the kind of chocolate assortment that’s good for
sharing with a bunch of really close friends. However, if you are a chocoholic,
you might want to keep the box for yourself because it’s rare to find
chocolate this good in North America.
Dan’s chocolate is to the chocolate world as Russian caviar is to the caviar
world. Once you try this, Hershey’s and Pot of Gold will be a distant memory.
