PI enjoy a glass of
wine now and then, and in keeping with my penchant for purchasing as much
online as I possibly can I decided to check out online wine vendors. I found
Geerlings & Wade and spent some enjoyable time browsing the site. The
wine I was looking for was a port wine by Whidbey's, one that is easily
found in grocery stores here in Spokane but one that is not so easily found
online.
To my delight, Geerwade.com had Whidbey's. I checked out the prices and was
pleasantly surprised to find that a case discount applied. Because of that
it was much more cost effective to purchase an entire case rather than a
smaller number of bottles, and with the holidays coming I figured it would
be a nice complement to holiday meals.
I received my invoice via email the day after making my purchase, but I was
surprised to not receive a UPS tracking number along with it. (I confess
that I love to watch my packages make their way to my house via the UPS
tracking options.)
No tracking number. So I figured there would be a minor delay in shipping
time; no big deal because I ordered well in advance of the holiday crush
time. To my surprise, I came home from work three days after I placed my
order and found a notice from UPS.
The downside of purchasing wine online is that an adult (age 21 or over)
must be present to sign for the shipment. While this makes sense in the
grand scheme of things (not terribly smart to leave a case of wine sitting
on the front porch), it is a bit frustrating if one has to wait for the
order because of having to organize time to go to the UPS station to pick it
up. Still, it is a minor inconvenience, once again considering the big
picture.
I was very pleased with the delivery time, even though it was a minor
irritation to not receive the UPS tracking information in advance. Still,
this inconvenience is something I can live with and I fully intend to
purchase more products from Geerlings & Wade
Prices were reasonable; quite comparable to those in the grocery stores. The
case discount effectively offset the shipping charges, which put the case
well within the amount of money I wanted to spend. The web site is secure,
so purchasing online with a credit card was a safe option.
Geerlings & Wade has a very user-friendly interface and the search
engine works well. The load time of the site is reasonable, and I did not
experience any problems with dead links or slow interface. Considering how
much online shopping I do this time of year, speed is essential! I was not
disappointed with this site.
