First
of all, I would like to say that even though I had a bad experience with
Mac Mall the first time I made a purchase with them, I still consider it
to be a good place to buy things for your computer. That is why I named
this article as I did. I have bought a few things from Mac Mall this
year with varying results. I found that ordering from their website was
much better than dealing with a live person on the phone. However, this
doesn’t mean that I am just antisocial or don’t like people. I just
got better results using their website than dealing with the salesman.
The problem with dealing with people on the phone is that they make more
mistakes than when you order off the internet. If there is a mistake on
the internet, it’s usually because of the user and not the computer.
When I ordered from the salesman on the phone, he screwed up the order
after thinking that I had the wrong item number. I stupidly believed him
and it turned out that he had the wrong number! I wanted the external
ORB drive and he sent me an internal ORB drive. I told explicitly that I
wanted an external drive because I have a laptop.
I then had to go through all kinds of trouble to get my refund and the
refund from Fedex. First, I had to take an afternoon off work to stay at
home to wait for the Fedex guy to pick up the internal ORB drive because
the salesman at Mac Mall said that that was the only way I would not
have to pay for the Fedex charges. I waited at the designated 4-hour
interval and the Fedex guy did not come. I then phoned the Mac mall guy
and he told me that the pickup had been canceled. I was furious by then.
I asked him why he did not tell me. He said that he had called me
earlier in the day but I was not home. My answering machine was on. I
forced myself to calm down and asked him to leave a message if it
happens again in the future. We had to arrange another time for the
Fedex guy. After I hurt myself punching my wall, I was forced to calm
down.
Eventually, the Fedex guy picked up my ORB drive and then I was billed
for it even though the Mac mall guy said that I would not have to pay
for it. So, I had to call him again. He then told me to pay for the
Fedex bill, fax him the receipt from Fedex, and then Mac mall would
reimburse me through my credit card. This meant that I really did not
have to stay at home two afternoons (taking time off work both times and
therefore losing money in the process) and I could have dropped the
package off at the Fedex place near my school. I couldn’t believe how
dishonest the Mac mall salesman was. At least I finally got reimbursed
for the Fedex charges, one month later. Of course it didn’t end there.
A few weeks later, the same Mac Mall salesman phoned me and asked me if
I had a copy of the receipt because they were having problems with Fedex.
I told him that I had been reimbursed already. He seemed surprised. I
didn’t send him anything.
That was about the time when I was in the market for a RAM upgrade for
my iBook. This time, I was wiser and went on their website instead to
order the 256 MB upgrade. They have really bad service but I their
prices are some of the best around. I got the upgrade for less than $75
with shipping. At that time, this was a great deal. Comp USA was going
to charge me $200 for the same thing just a few days before. Fortunately,
I waited to check the internet. My internet transaction on Mac mall went
much smoother and no mistakes were made then.
When I bought my ORB drive, I also had to get a serial cable. The
salesman told me that the only one they had was over 20 dollars. He said
that it was because they didn’t make them anymore. I checked the
catalog later and found one for about half the price. Of course it was
too late and I just got angrier.
Therefore, my final advice about ordering from Mac mall is to use the
internet and forget about talking to their salespeople because you will
have a better chance of getting your order correctly filled if you punch
it in yourself. If you need to do research on a product, ask your
friends or the people at your local computer store, look at the Mac Mall
catalog, read magazines, or search the internet for the answers you need.
This will probably save you a lot of hassles in the long run. The prices
are some of the best you can get from a retailer. The only place you can
get a better deal is on E-Bay.

I'm a
frequent MacMall user. I've bought several iMac's, a scanner, a digital
camcorder, a digital still camera and lots of little goodies there.
Their prices are incredible! Their service is good. Their shipping costs
are reasonable. (I've occasionally found that its faster to ship items
overnight than 2 day UPS!)
Great Prices:
I receive the MacMall emailings which list all of their current
specials. Though I often just delete them, I'm occasionally caught by
the price of something that I've had my eye on but never thought I could
afford.
Examples: I've coveted a digital camcorder for several years but didn't
want to shell out $1000. I got one at MacMall (which works quite well, I
might add) for about $550.
More recent example: I just today went to Dazzle's site and decided to
purchase their Hollywood DV - bridge (which basically means that I'll be
able to transfer my VHS videos to a digital format). Dazzle sells them
for $299. At MacMall, they're only $259. I also bought a 2 year warranty
for it and its still less than the manufacturer's price!
Ah! And I almost moved on without mentioning their great promo deals.
For example, when I bought my first iMac there, they had a deal where
you could get 64mb ram for free (I only had to pay the installation fee,
which wasn't much.) I also got a Myst game for only the cost of shipping
through another promo deal. Even when other sites sell computers for the
same price, MacMall's promos tip them to the forefront.
Service:
I've never had any problems returning anything to MacMall. (I once
ordered two iMacs and decided afterwards that I wanted a different kind.
I simply refused the deliveries (as MacMall had instructed me to do) and
made a second order. No problems!)
I have made orders from MacMall both by telephone (using their catalog)
and online. Both methods have gone well. The MacMall representatives are
very friendly by phone. The checkout process is pretty smooth online.
That search engine of theirs:
The only negative to MacMall is their website. (Its not a major pitfall,
mind you, but it could be better.)
Unless I know EXACTLY what I'm looking for, the search engine is useless.
(I searched for a product that would help me convert VHS to digital and
it pretty much brought up nothing. Amazingly enough, when I figured out
the name of a specific product that would do the job, I looked it up on
MacMall and they had it. Their search engine can find a product by name,
but apparently not by what it does.)
I've also found that MacMall is not the place to research a product.
After reading a description I'm often left wondering, "is that
really what I want?" I generally have to pop over to the
manufacturer's site to get more info. then pop back to make my purchase.
