Last
summer I received an email offer from Overstock.com. I had received them
before and glanced at them occasionally but nothing had caught my eye.
But this particular email just jumped out at me. They were offering four
crystal tumblers, 12-ounce size, for $32 with free shipping. The picture
looked good so I read the fine print. The manufacturer was Stuart, a
British subsidiary of the Irish company, Waterford Crystal. I was
hooked.
I had received my very first piece of Waterford Crystal as a wedding
present in 1992. In 1998 while visiting Ireland not only did I buy some
more Waterford, I also toured their factory. I was well aware of the
quality and couldn’t believe that these tumblers were under $10 each.
At a department store, Waterford runs $25 to $30 for a tumbler or
stemware piece, not a set.
I ordered 2 sets thinking I would keep one and use the other as a gift.
Shipping was free and there was a discount code for first time buyers.
About 5 days later a large package arrived and I tore into it like a kid
at Christmas. I was not disappointed. The tumblers were well packaged
and all arrived in perfect condition. They are heavy 24% lead crystal,
with the Stuart signature marking worked into the design. (If you are
familiar with Waterford, they, too, have a signature marking in the
design. All the crystal I bought in Ireland, including Galway and
Tipperary, has signatures to prove their authenticity.) Needless to say,
I kept both sets for myself.
Overstock.com had won me over as a customer that day. Later when we
wanted a 9-inch TV/VCR combo to use in the van I ended up getting it at
Overstock.com. Of course, I shopped around both on the Internet and in
the brick and mortar stores but Overstock.com had the best deal. Again
the package arrived in about a week. Earlier this year, I needed a new
hard-side suitcase and once more found the best deal at Overstock.com.
After researching digital cameras since last Christmas we bought one of
them from Overstock.com in June. I have never been disappointed.
They offer quite a variety of products. The main categories are
Apparel
Baby Center
Computer and Office
DVDs, CDs, and Media
Electronics and Cameras
Gifts and Gadgets
Hardware and Garden
Home Décor
Housewares
Jewelry and Accessories
Luggage and Business
Sports Gear
Toys and Dolls
Travel Center
Phone and Internet
and each of these has subcategories.
At one time all shipping was free but Overstock.com has instituted a
$3.95 shipping charge, regardless of what or how much you buy. Right now
they are offering 8 pages of items that have free shipping. Order any
one of these and get free shipping on your entire order. They currently
have 20 pages of seasonal clearance and 3 pages of items that are 80%
off retail.
Navigating the site is simple. There is a blue bar along the left side
with the categories listed. It also has links to check out, shopping
cart, frequently asked questions, your account, and other information.
They also offer a search by product, by brand, or by new arrivals.
Product descriptions are very detailed, often running to three or four
paragraphs. They may state the manufacturer, the brand, the size, the
specs, even the type of battery needed. And I have always found a
picture for whatever product I looked at.
Ordering online is a cinch – enter your shipping and credit card
information. They accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American
Express and they have a 100% security guarantee. You may opt to
subscribe to their newsletter that seems to come about once a week.
Think of it as one of those sales flyers that comes in the Sunday paper.
The site lists not only an email address but also a snail mail address
and a toll free number. I have never had to call and deal with customer
service because all of my orders had been about as perfect as they could
be. I would feel more comfortable giving the site 5 stars if I had dealt
with customer service. How a company handles problems may be a better
indicator of future success than if they have no problems to handle.
The biggest drawback I see to this site is that many of the electronic
items, including the TV/VCR combo and the camera that I bought , are
factory reconditioned. Most come with a manufacturer’s warranty and
any item can be returned to Overstock.com within 30 days. If the item is
factory reconditioned it is clearly stated in the product description
and should not come as a surprise after ordering.
One other minor drawback is that they are occasionally out of a
particular product. The nature of the business means that products come
and go and come and go. As the stock gets low they often note that in
the product description. It might say “only 3 left”.
In addition, Overstock.com does not carry the latest and the hottest
products. They have only recently started carrying MP3 players. You are
more likely to find, traditional, non-trendy items at Overstock.com.
Of Special Note
You may earn a rebate by shopping through ebates.com and you may earn
miles by shopping through milesource.com. Sales tax is collected only in
Kentucky and Utah. You may buy and redeem gift certificates online but
they offer no gift-wrapping service.
If you are a bargain hunter, you really should take a look at Overstock.com
the next time you will make a purchase. They just may have the best deal
out there.
